Dr. Layman Hicks | Level Up Your Leadership
Wednesday April 23, 2025 3:00pm - 4:00pm EDT
“How did you become the top student leader on a campus of over 38,000 students?”
“How did you get to manage a budget of over $10 million?”

These are only two of the many questions youth audiences ask of Dr. Hicks. And his answer, to all of them, is straight-forward and true – it wasn’t easy! In this jam-packed workshop, Dr. Hicks enthusiastically clears the path of principles that led him to the road, on the road, and over the road to his leadership success. The candid and hard-learned leadership and life lessons he has encountered over the years have served him well and he shows students how these principles can do the same for them through educational content and enriching activities.

Concurrent Session | Chemistry of Cookies
Thursday April 24, 2025 1:15pm - 2:00pm EDT
At this year's FCCLA State Leadership Conference, we propose a hands-on, engaging workshop where attendees can learn how to host an exciting "Chemistry of Baking Cookies" lab for elementary school students. This workshop introduces the scientific principles behind baking and encourages students to explore chemistry in a fun and interactive way. More than anything it gets these young students excited about FCCLA and FCS classes. The lab focuses on the five core ingredients in baking cookies: flour, sugar, butter, eggs, and the SECRET INGREDIENT (AIR). Attendees will gain insights into the role of each ingredient, highlighting how they contribute to the structure, texture, and taste of the cookies. We will then dive deeper into the chemistry of baking by exploring two key chemical reactions that happen during the baking process: caramelization and the Maillard reaction. Participants will receive a guide on how to set up a similar lab at their own school, with tips on organizing the event, managing the materials, and engaging students with simple scientific explanations. By the end of the session, attendees will be equipped with the knowledge and resources needed to bring this fun and educational chemistry lab to their own FCCLA chapter. This workshop is an excellent opportunity to inspire students about science, engage them in hands-on learning, and spark their curiosity about FCCLA and the Culinary Career Pathway.

Chemo Comfort: How Student Leaders are Changing Lives for Cancer Patients!
The school year had barely begun when students at Warren East High School received heartbreaking news: Mrs. Brown, their 35-year-old art teacher, was diagnosed with breast cancer.
Having seen loved ones battle cancer, these students knew the road ahead wouldn’t be easy. But in conversations with Mrs. Brown, three teens discovered a challenge they’d never considered—finding port-accessible clothing for chemotherapy.
Instead of standing by, they took action.
